Wailord has been one of my favorite and if not my favorite water Pokemon since I was a kid. I remember there was a cool scene in Pokemon Ranger and the temple of the sea with Wailords in the ocean. That movie is super nostalgic! I want to go back and watch it soon.
I decided to start breeding a beefy Wailmer to add to the team for the Battle Frontier in Pokemon Emerald. I did some theory crafting and considered that a tanky Wailord with offensive moves such as Surf and even Fissure was a Pokemon that could benefit the team. I debated training a Lapras and even Gyarados instead of Wailord but ultimately decided upon Wailord.
Starting the breeding process, I discovered that Wailord only learns Fissure through egg moves. I had to do some side quests to get this move on the Wailmers. I then used my perfect HP IV Ditto to start transferring IVs.
After only a few batches of eggs, a high IVed Wailmer hatched with perfect IVs in HP! The nature was serious which is a neutral nature so this was neither a good nor bad thing. I ran the stats through and online calculator to get an idea on where the IVs were. Below were the results.
The HP, Defense, Special Attack, and Speed were all great! It was known since that HP was 31 since the person in Emerald told me. However the Attack and Special Defense were lacking. The Attack stat I was not concerned with however I really wanted a high Special Defense. I had a few rare candies in this game and decided to temporarily use them on Wailmer. Then I ran the stats again through the IV calculator. Below are the results, then I reset my game to not waste the rare candies (I saved before I used them).
I knew that HP was 31 and that the total IVs were between 151 and 186 (from old guy in emerald). From the numbers given in the calculator, I determined that the IVs were likely on the higher range on what was calculated. This Wailord seemed pretty strong despite the underwhelming Special Defense. Despite that, I decided to EV train it!
This Wailord was EV trained in HP 252 // Defense 104 // Special Defense 152. We managed to get the maximum HP stat of 544 which was cool. She BEEFY!
Below are the current moves we will be running in the Battle Frontier. I did some testing and found that her hidden power is Electric which is actually great to combat the frequent Water Pokemon in the Frontier! I am highly considering using this but am unsure which move to swap. We have some battling and testing to do first with this set up!
Below are the final stats, IVs, and EVs for Wailord as well as my other Pokemon I have trained!
